Color of the Year: Emerald

Vintage Stylist: How to Wear Winter White

Wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas.  There is nothing more chic than wearing white in the winter.  The key to wearing winter whites is to layer in different shades and textures of white, cream and ivory.  Don't be afraid to mix in tans, beige and gray, as well.  Have fun styling your winter whites.

It was love at first sight upon viewing Dsquared's Pre Fall 2013 Collection.  Everything about this collection is perfection, from the styling down to the vintage props that tied it all together.  Distinctly inspired by the vintage aesthetic of the 1940's but updated with curvier silhouettes and modern pieces such as the denim button up, leather gloves, snakeskin accessories, etc.  The model Jasmine Tookes did an excellent job channeling style icon, Billie Holiday.  She even made socks and high heels look amazing.  We are secretly coveting everything in this pre fall collection. Well Read: Knitting Vintage

"Knitting Vintage" is a great read, it's filled with 30 knitting projects inspired by period fashions.  What I love most, is that it provides key themes, popular designers, illustrations and mood board inspiration for each project and decade.  It's loaded with tons of information, a mix of vintage fashion history with very detailed knitting directions.  It even provides resources on where to source all the materials needed.  Each project calls for modern materials but encourages the reader to use vintage accessories and notions.  The designer reinvents each vintage pattern for a more modern appeal, which goes hand and hand with our philosophy here at Borough Vintage....I definitely plan on trying my hand at knitting this winter, good thing this book has various skill levels.  Wish me luck!!!


Stocked: Jumpsuit
Fashion is cyclical and the trend has returned with a sleek, androgynous feel. Jumpsuits made their way down the runway in beautiful hues, different lengths and unexpected fabrics.  The jumpsuit is elegant for winter but can also work as a transitional piece for spring.  Remember to choose a jumpsuit that flatters your body type.  It can be casually worn during the day or glammed up for a night look when paired with the right counterparts. Here are a couple of style tips on how to wear your jumpsuit this season.

1) DO wear a blouse underneath. A blouse underneath provides a subtle sophistication to your look.


2) DO try a jumpsuit in a fun, quirky print.  Prints are personal, choose one that works for you.
 


3) DO wear an all black jumpsuit.  Black is always figure flattering and provides a blank canvas to play up your accessories.

Hubert de Givenchy was known for his skill with luxurious fabrics.  You can't mention little black dress without paying homage to Givenchy.  He was famously known for designing most of Audrey Hepburn's wardrobe in her professional and personal collection.  Here is a 1987 lace evening dress with sequins, silk faille with velvet ruched satin ribbons.

Winter naturally calls for heavier, rich and luxurious fabrics. Velvet has been adorning the shoulders of the rich and regal since the beginning of time.  The highly prized textile symbolized wealth, power and prestige amongst social classes.  It was mainly reserved for elite members only.  The reason it was so popular with nobility and appreciated today is due to the rich colors of dyed velvet. It's safe to say the velvet trend is back and it's for everyone.

Who doesn't love Chanel?  Karl Lagerfeld orchestrated another inspiring fashion moment in history.  Tartan plaids,kilts,lace, tweed and argyle dominated the runway during the showing of  his Pre Fall 2013 collection.  The collection had a vintage feel of Chanel's classic persona ,original proportions with Scottish traditions. Karl's Parisian edgy influence didn't go unnoticed.  Lagerfeld has been the head creative designer at Chanel since 1983 and his collections are always consistent and visually stimulating.  The creative genius always pushes the envelope.
